Study: Red Meat As Part of Balanced Diet Boosts Mental Health

A recent study conducted by researchers at South Dakota State University in the United States has revealed that including red meat as part of a high-quality, balanced diet may contribute to improved mental health and enhanced microbial diversity in the gut.

The study clarified that individuals who adhere to a well-balanced diet with moderate intake of red meat are less likely to experience depression and certain mental health disorders. These individuals also show favorable changes in gut microbial diversity and benefit from essential nutrients critical for brain health, such as zinc, selenium, and vitamin B12.

The findings were presented at the Nutrition 2025 conference, organized by the American Society for Nutrition. Researchers based their conclusions on data gathered from the American Gut Project, which involved 4,915 adults categorized into four distinct dietary groups according to their red meat consumption patterns.

The results emphasized that the overall quality of a person’s diet is a more significant factor in determining health outcomes than the mere exclusion of specific food items. In other words, moderate inclusion of red meat within a nutritionally rich diet appears to support both mental and physical well-being.

According to the researchers, the study highlights the need to shift the dietary conversation away from eliminating single ingredients and toward promoting dietary balance and variety. Maintaining a high-quality diet not only supports mental resilience but also plays a crucial role in nurturing a healthy and diverse gut microbiome, which is increasingly linked to various aspects of human health.
