Miracle in the Delivery Room: International Modern Hospital Saves Mother and Baby from Rare Pregnancy Emergency

Dubai, UAE –– A routine delivery turned into a dramatic battle for survival at International Modern Hospital, Bur Dubai, when an expectant mother suffered a rare and life-threatening obstetric emergency—Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE). Thanks to the hospital’s swift medical response, expert team, and advanced interventions, both mother and baby survived against all odds.

A Life-Threatening Crisis Unfolds

Radhikaben, a second-time mother at full-term pregnancy, was admitted for labor induction due to high blood sugar levels, excess amniotic fluid, and a larger-than-average baby. Initially stable, she suddenly collapsed during labor, displaying alarming symptoms:

  • Weak pulse and severe bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Fetal distress with a sudden drop in the baby’s heart rate

Recognizing the signs of AFE, the medical team immediately initiated an emergency C-section to save both lives.

Rapid Intervention Saves Two Lives

The baby was delivered in critical condition with an Apgar score of just 3, requiring immediate neonatal resuscitation. Meanwhile, the mother developed disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)—a severe clotting disorder that led to massive internal bleeding, with a 2.5-liter blood loss.

To stabilize her, doctors performed:
8 pints of blood transfusion
Multiple units of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and other blood products

However, the complications didn’t end there. Post-surgery, further tests revealed a rectus sheath hematoma—internal bleeding in the abdominal muscles caused by DIC. Rather than resorting to another high-risk surgery, the hospital’s interventional radiology team performed a minimally invasive embolization, successfully stopping the bleeding.

A Testament to Medical Excellence

Following intensive care, Radhikaben made a full recovery, proving that rapid medical intervention and a multidisciplinary approach can overcome even the rarest obstetric emergencies.

“AFE is one of the most feared complications in obstetrics, and immediate recognition is crucial,” said Dr. Meera T Anto, Specialist Gynecologist at International Modern Hospital. “Our team’s seamless coordination between obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, intensivists, and radiologists made all the difference.”

A Story of Hope for Expecting Mothers

While AFE is extremely rare, this case highlights key lessons:
Recognizing warning signs can save lives – A sudden maternal collapse demands immediate action.
Medical teamwork is vital – A multidisciplinary approach ensures the best outcomes.
Advanced medical interventions are game-changers – Blood transfusions, neonatal resuscitation, and interventional radiology played a critical role in survival.

Today, both mother and baby are healthy and thriving, a testament to the expertise and dedication of the International Modern Hospital, Bur Dubai.
